The Republic of Tajikistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia with 90% of the country covered by mountains.
Tajikistan joined the list of countries with World Heritage Site status in July 2010. The proto-urban site of Sarazm was inscribed as a cultural site due to this ‘archaeological site bearing testimony to the development of human settlements in Central Asia from the 4th millennium BCE to the end of the 3rd millennium BCE.’ Furthermore there are various other sites in Tajikistan, based on their cultural or natural heritage, which are currently on the tentative list of World Heritage sites. On 21 June 2013 Tajikistan added another World Heritage site to their list, being the Tajik National Park, their first natural site in the country to be inscribed.
Other than exceptional natural and cultural beauty, Tajikistan has much to offer the intrepid traveller. Is this your next destination?
