De Hoek Country Hotel on the banks of the Magalies River, just outside the small town of Magaliesburg has been operating since 1994 and I can truly say that they have just gone from strength to strength during the past 18 years.

De Hoek is owner run by Michael & Michelle Holenstein and they have managed to maintain standards on food, service and facilities that are superb. Most of their staff has been with them for many years and frequent guests even request specific staff members when they return again and again. There is no substitute for personal service in a beautiful and relaxed country environment.

The exquisite rooms, 20 in total, have many outstanding features and naming a few:
• extra length mahogany beds (style is 4-poster, French empire or sleight beds)
• 100% cotton percale linen and down duvets
• All superior rooms have under carpet heating, under tile heating, air-conditioning and some have fireplaces

The above mentioned and other standard features ensure that both business and leisure guests thoroughly enjoy their stay; cosy during winter and tranquil shaded garden nooks for summer.

And yet more is on offer! Owner Michael is also the chef, tantalising guests’ taste buds with delectable 5- or 6-course dinners, al fresco lunches with remarkable flavours, notably the avocado and papaya salad, chickpea curry and White Lindt Chocolate Tart. In my opinion it is rather unusual to have three exceptional taste sensations during one meal. De Hoek is also well known for high tea on Saturday afternoon as well as picnics in their lovely gardens.

More facts: Stone Bridge House is ideal for conferencing and functions, up to 60 guests. (1 main venue with 2 break away venues & Michael’s Veranda Restaurant). The Garden Pavilion is very popular and can seat up to 30 guests for a conference or function. The main restaurant, The Conservatory can accommodate up to 40 guests.

Facts that you may not know: A helipad, archery, lawn croquet, boules and swimming pool are available on the property. It is also possible to launch for hot air ballooning from De Hoek. Their gardens are a feast. When I visited recently, before the first rain of the season I was absolutely blown away by the state of the gardens. You have to have special know how and passion to maintain a garden such as this through winter!

Bed and breakfast leisure sharing rates from R1 472 per person, 24-hour conference package sharing rate from R1 990 per person.

In closing, De Hoek Country Hotel comes highly recommended.
