The Gotthard Base Tunnel, Switzerland

A fabulous engineering feat! The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) is a railway tunnel through the Alps in Switzerland expected to open on 1 June 2016 and to enter into service on 11 December 2016. With a route length of 57 km (35.4 mi) and a total of 151.84 km (94.3 mi) of tunnels, shafts and passages, it will be the world’s longest and deepest traffic tunnel and the first flat low-level route through the Alps. Tunnel construction started in 1996. (Source: Wikipedia)

There is a unique opportunity for a limited time only to experience the ‘inside’ of the tunnel, up close and personal…From August 2, 2016, passengers may descend into the once-in-a-century construction on exclusive tunnel rides, disembarkation in the depths of the mountain included. The special “Gottardino” train only runs until November 27, 2016 and the number of tickets is limited.
